Risk Assessments

In order to maintain a safe working environment and therefore a healthy, safe workforce, you will need to perform risk assessments.  By law, regardless of the size of your organisation, every employer shall make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health and safety of their employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work.

Risk assessments will help you to identify and focus on the risks that matter most in your workplace – the ones that have the potential to cause harm or serious injury.

Risk assessments must be undertaken by a competent person. Nolan Safety will act as the competent person, working with you to identify the hazards and evaluate the risks associated with your workplace. We will compile the necessary risk assessments and provide you with information and instruction as to how to review and update these assessments in the future.

Should you decide to retain Nolan Safety on an annual basis, you can use our name as your competent person to assist you in all health and safety matters.

Failure to manage risk in the workplace can seriously affect your business, harm your workforce, and could also land you in court

With our vast experience of writing and implementing risk assessments we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any issues you may have.

Fire Risk Assessments

A Fire Risk Assessment is an organised and methodical examination of your premises. It looks at the activities carried out and the likelihood that a fire could start and cause harm to those in and around the premises.

You must ensure a Fire Risk Assessment of your premises is carried out and maintain a Fire Management Plan under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order. This applies if you are:

•responsible for business premises

•an employer or self-employed with business premises

•responsible for a part of a dwelling where that part is solely used for business purposes

•a charity or voluntary organisation

•a contractor with a degree of control over any premises

•Providing accommodation for paying guests.

Good management of fire safety in your premises is essential to ensure the safety of your staff and visitors.

Nolan Safety’s Fire Risk Assessment will identify the fire hazards; people or groups involved, and will evaluate the risks.  We will examine your fire detection, fire warning and emergency lighting systems and the means of escape.  The assessment contains an action plan for any improvements required, giving timescales to implement recommendations.

A Fire Risk Assessment is vital for business contingency as, in the event of a fire at your premises, it is quite possible that your insurance company may dispute making payment if you do not have a current Fire Risk Assessment with a live action plan.

COSHH Assessments

Regulation 6 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) requires an employer to formally assess all operations and/or processes which a reliable to cause exposure to hazardous substances.

Performing a COSHH assessment demonstrates that the company has considered all the factors relevant to the work and judgements have been made with regard to the type of hazard, monitoring exposure levels, and health surveillance of employees who may be at risk.

In order to comply with the regulations each assessment is required to be completed by a competent person. Therefore, the decision as to who should carry out that assessment will depend on the knowledge and experience required for the particular assessment and the complexity of the operation and/or process.

Nolan Safety will act as the competent person, working with you to identify operations and/or processes that are liable to cause exposure to hazardous substances. We will generate and complete the necessary COSHH assessments and provide you with instruction as to how to review and update these assessments in the future.

Should you decide to retain Nolan Safety on an annual basis, you can use our name as your competent person to assist you in all health and safety matters.  Failure to conduct COSHH assessments can seriously affect your business, harm your workforce and land you in Court.

Principal Designer Role

The role of Principal Designer is to provide the client with a key project adviser in respect of construction health and safety risk management matters.

Clients, designers and Principal Contractors all benefit from the expertise which our PD team can offer.

Our consultants, who are Registered Members of the Association for Project Safety (IMaPS), will manage your CDM requirements from start to finish, giving you suitable, sufficient advice and assistance in order to help you to comply with your duties under the Construction Design and Management Regulations.

We facilitate the flow of communication between all parties and attend regular safety meetings on site. We also produce all necessary documentation, from pre-construction information through to safety files for the project.

Our management systems ensure our dedicated CDM team proactively co-ordinate your CDM needs. We review designs, liaise with all parties to the project, notify the HSE when applicable and collect all relevant information to produce a user-friendly health and safety file at the end of the construction phase.

Construction Site Safety Visits and Inspections

Reduce costly accidents on your sites with Nolan Safety’s site visiting service. We provide the most comprehensive construction site safety inspections available.

Whilst demonstrating compliance with the CDM Regulations 2015, the construction site visiting process gives you an ongoing opportunity to review your construction site safety from an independent viewpoint.

It is not just a policing exercise, but a valuable opportunity to increase the health and safety knowledge of the site team through toolbox talks and discussions on health and safety working practices.

You benefit from knowing what is happening on your site, whether you are there or not. Our report will be sent electronically by e-mail to enable you to monitor the health and safety progress of your construction sites from anywhere in the world.

Whilst on site we will:

•Walk with your senior site representative and discuss the current health and safety situation and how the site will develop;

•Audit some of the basic site documentation (and sub-contractor documentation) and make constructive comments as necessary;

•Conduct a toolbox talk of your choice;

•Complete a detailed site report form which is left on site and relayed by e-mail to your office within 24 hours.

The amount of time spent on site depends entirely upon the complexity and scope of the site however, the quality of our work is paramount and it would be unusual for our consultants to visit more than three sites in any one day.

Construction Phase Plan (CPP)

All construction projects, no matter the size or duration, are legally required to have a construction phase plan. These plans are also required for domestic projects.

The Construction Phase Plan must be in place before the commencement of a project and should set out the organisation and arrangements that have been put in place to manage risk and co-ordinate the work on site.

Whether your project is a small refurbishment or a new build development, Nolan Safety can write a professional, project specific, Construction Phase Plan (CPP) to ensure you are legally compliant with CDM regulations.

If you are a Principal Contractor on a construction project and would like us to write your Construction Phase Plan for you, our experienced safety professionals are here to help. Site Visits are included to identify potential hazards and assess the risks relating to your specific project.

We have many satisfied clients who have gained accreditation with SAFE Contractor, CHAS, Construction Line, etc.
